lfLightfair 2016

I spent 3 days this past April in San Diego walking the floor of Lightfair International. There were over 600 exhibitors and 27,000 attendees. It was a great chance to talk directly to the engineers and product designers of many of the lighting lines I specify.

LEDs were once again the overwhelming topic. More companies are exploring ways to try to produce LEDs that get warmer as they dim, like we are used to with halogen sources. Also gaining in popularity are technologies that allow you to choose or change the exact color of your “white” light after the fixtures are installed.
But in the end there was as much discussion with other lighting professionals about the myriad problems with LEDs, especially around dimming performance and lack of consistency between factory claims and experiences of real life installations.

With technology changing almost as fast as the speed of light, it’s illuminating to hear people sharing their experiences.
